Reiki: Restoring Balance & Harmony

Reiki Master, Claire Bradbury talks about the ancient healing art of Reiki.

In a world that often feels chaotic and overwhelming, many people are turning to ancient healing practices to restore balance, peace, and a sense of well-being. Among these, Reiki stands out as a gentle yet powerful modality that addresses the mind, body, and soul. Originating from Japan, Reiki is a hands-on healing technique that not only reduces stress and promotes relaxation but also supports healing on multiple levels. In essence, Reiki is about restoring harmony, gently removing that which no longer serves us.

What is Reiki?

Reiki, pronounced “ray-key,” is derived from two Japanese words: "Rei," meaning "higher power" or "spiritual wisdom," and "Ki," which translates to "life force energy." Together, Reiki means “spiritually guided life force energy.” This life force energy flows through all living things and is believed to be the essence that sustains life. When our life force energy is low, we are more susceptible to illness, stress, and emotional disturbances. Conversely, when this energy is high, we experience vitality, health, and a deep sense of peace.

Reiki practitioners serve as channels through which this universal life force energy flows. By placing their hands on or near the body, practitioners help guide this energy, facilitating the healing process. Unlike some forms of hands-on modalities, Reiki does not involve physical manipulation or the use of substances. Instead, it works on the subtle energetic layers that surround and permeate the physical body, addressing imbalances at their root.

The Experience of a Reiki Session

A Reiki session typically takes place in a calm, serene environment, often accompanied by soft music and dim lighting. The recipient lies fully clothed on a massage table while the practitioner places their hands lightly on or just above various parts of the body, allowing the energy to flow where it is needed most. Many describe the experience as a warm, glowing sensation that radiates throughout their body, promoting relaxation and a sense of well-being.

Each person’s experience with Reiki is unique, but common sensations include feelings of deep relaxation, warmth, tingling, or a sense of lightness. Some people may even see colours, feel emotional releases, or enter a meditative state. Regardless of the specific experience, the underlying effect is the same: Reiki creates a space for the mind, body, and spirit to come back into alignment.

Integrating Reiki into Modern Life

While Reiki is a spiritual practice, it complements conventional medical and therapeutic treatments. Many hospitals, wellness centres, and clinics worldwide now offer Reiki as a supportive therapy to enhance patient care. Reiki is not meant to replace medical treatments but to work alongside them, providing an additional layer of support for the healing process.

In a world that often pulls us in many directions at once, Reiki serves as a gentle reminder of the importance of self-care, balance, and connection to a higher power. It helps us to let go of what no longer serves us, making space for health, happiness, and harmony to flourish. Whether you are seeking relief from stress, pain, or simply wish to reconnect with your inner self, Reiki offers a path toward healing that is as profound as it is gentle.
